The president of Caixa Econômica Federal, Daniella Marques, said this Monday (4.Jul.2022) that harassment is “unacceptable” and the facts at the state-owned company are being investigated, but that it will not pursue it. She removed the group that commanded the bank in the previous management.
She gave an interview to GloboNews. Daniella was appointed on Wednesday (June 29) and took office on Friday (July 1), in an internal agenda.
“A company that wants to perpetuate itself, that has a long life like Caixa, a bank with 161 years of history, is only possible when the company has a strong culture, a solid process and the institution is certainly above anyone else”said. “I have to commit myself here, yes, that there are serious facts being exposed, complaints, recordings, involve other bodies”completed.
Daniella declared that, as a woman, she does not find it acceptable that there are signs of sexual harassment and said that the topic is a national problem. “The fact is that half of the economically active working women are victims of sexual harassment at work. This is serious. I have to commit. It will be investigated with rigor, independence and responsibility. We have no intention of persecuting anyone, let alone protecting anyone.”said.
The Caixa president took office after Pedro Guimarães left on Wednesday (June 29) after being accused of sexual harassment. Read here what was reported by employees.
On Monday morning (July 4) the MPT (Ministry of Labor) carried out an inspection at the bank’s headquarters, in Brasília. The procedure served to understand the work dynamics. Last Wednesday (June 29) the agency opened a preliminary investigation to investigate a possible recurring practice of harassment among employees.
In addition to Pedro Guimarães, the vice president of Wholesale Business, Celso Leonardo Barbosa also left the bank (with resignation request). Antonio Carlos Ferreiravice president of Logistics, will occupy a lower position.
Daniella said that the chief of staff, Rozana Alves Guimarães, and 5 other strategic consultants were also removed. There are 20 people who occupy this type of position. She said that “possibly” he will fire everyone to take a team he trusts.
She stated that the removal does not serve to judge or condemn. “[É] for us to preserve the bank’s image at this moment and isolate the day-to-day problem of the bank’s business”. She said it is her role to call people to advise her.
Daniella will indicate 3 other professionals she trusts, two of whom are women:
Danielle Calazans will be the “right arm” in the management and restructuring of the bank’s areas and businesses. She acted in the merger of 5 ministries (Planning, Finance, Foreign Trade, Labor and Development and Management) at the beginning of the government Jair Bolsonaro (PL). Motta –who worked at Santander, Itaú and Votorantim– will focus on Caixa’s product area, such as credit, wholesale and business.
Caroline Busatto was one of the creators of the Women’s Entrepreneurship Program. “I intend to focus more on sustainability, especially taking care of women. I want to make this crisis an opportunity for all of us women. I will not turn the page of the Box. I’ve already turned the page on this chapter that has been doing reputation damage.”declared.
WOMEN’S TEAM
Caixa’s president stated that half of the bank’s Vice-Presidency will be made up of women. Currently, the state-owned company has 12 positions: Operator agent; Strategy and people; Finance and controllership; Investment funds; Government; Housing; Logistics and operations; Wholesale business; Retail business; Retail network; Scratchs; and Technology and digital.
Daniella Marques said she suffered several of the “pain” of women, but who did not experience sexual harassment. She stated that she worked 20 years in the financial market and that she had barriers with the resistance of companies to work in the sector because she is a woman. She said that “jokes” are not acceptable in the work environment.
She stated that she works very hard and takes steps to combat the practices, with the support of the president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) and Minister Paulo Guedes (Economy). “I had my 1st meeting with the Board of Directors, which is the highest governance body of the bank, responsible for taking action. Before I was even nominated and the bank president [Guimarães] having been removed, the Council had already taken a very important step, which was to authorize the hiring of an independent investigative body”said.
The company will still submit to the competition and should be chosen within a week, according to her. It will be used to investigate the charges.
“The 2nd step that we approved and I proposed was the removal of all people who may be involved. These allegations, above all, involve people. Caixa has always had the vocation of taking care of people. These people have families, children, wives, and it is not interesting for me, Caixa or anyone else to expose these people”declared Daniella.
The bank’s president said she will preserve the institution’s nearly 150 million customers. “Before, mainly, judging anything, and I am delving deeper and understanding everything that surrounds this investigation, we have to preserve the bank’s image, protect the employee and you can rescue the employee’s self-esteem”he said.
Daniella said she will be the only female president “of the 15 or 20 largest banks in Brazil”. He stated that he has carte blanche from Caixa’s Board of Directors so that the crisis becomes the “mother of the female cause” to combat harassment throughout Brazil.
“I am talking about combating sexual and moral harassment in the workplace, leadership training within Caixa, promoting female entrepreneurship as a tool for social transformation”said. “We want to catch this symptom of the disease and Caixa will embrace this cause with everything”he added.
