Police operation ordered by the office of the first lady and vice president removed heads of the court
Nicaraguan Vice President Rosario Murillo, wife of President Daniel Ortega, took full control of the Supreme Court of Justice after a controversial police operation on October 24.
The information is from local press and could not be independently confirmed by the Power360. According to Nicaraguan portals, the president of the Court, Alba Luz Ramos, was removed from office and confined to her own home.
Other Judiciary leaders were also removed from their duties by order of Murillo, who is also her husband’s spokesperson. With this, the Ortega regime now has even more control over the actions of the Judiciary.
Daniel Ortega has been in power in Nicaragua since 2007. He had already been president from 1985 to 1990 and returned to power in 2007. He then obtained permission from the Nicaraguan Judiciary – controlled by the regime – to run again in 2011, 2016 and 2021 – something which was originally prohibited by the country’s Constitution.
In the last 3 years, Ortega has intensified the persecution of political and religious opponents. In 2021, on the eve of the last elections, 5 presidential candidates were arrested on charges of attempting a coup d’état.
Until the publication of this text, the Ortega regime had not officially commented on the intervention in the Judiciary.
