Just months after the legendary group broke up “the Beatles”, a documentary directed by Michael Lindsay-Hogg called “Let It Be” premiered as a “kind of strange postscript at the end of his career”.
Recorded in 1969the movie “Let It Be” was intended to “rekindle the spirit” of the group, but ended up showing the separation of the Beatleswhere it was possible to capture moments of tension and attitudes between John Lennon, Paul MCCARTNEY, George Harrison and Ringo Starr which ultimately culminated in the band breaking up.
Half a century later, the documentary returns, remastered and restored by Peter Jackson (The Lord of the Rings), who had already had access to more than 60 hours of unpublished footage recorded in 1969 by Michael Lindsay-Hogg’s team for the series “The Beatles: Get Back.”
The new version of “Let It Be” came to Disney+ since today, May 8, 2024where from the original 16 mm negative, they create a version of the latest mixing technology.
“John had met Yoko (Ono) and was going on his own journey, Paul was doing what he wanted and Ringo had started filming movies,” he assured the agency. AFP Jonathan Clyde, director of the production company Apple Corps.
The movie “Let It Be” shows a the Beatles in their last rehearsals and the recording sessions for the album of the same name (Let It Be), as well as his unannounced concert on the roof of his record company building on London’s Savile Row.
“They never felt a great love for ‘Let It Be‘Because I think they associated it with all those problems,” Clyde added.
For the journalist and music critic John Harris, the documentary “Let It Be” is a snapshot of London in 1969, as well as an opportunity to remember and understand the moment when The Beatles took to the roof of a building for their last concert together.
“It’s an iconic image. John in his fur coat, Ringo in his red plastic raincoat, Paul in that beautiful black suit and George in his green pants and baseball boots. It’s all perfect“, he concluded.
