Western Uusimaa a district court has sentenced a man in his thirties on Friday to a short prison sentence for aggravated theft.
A special case is the way the thief got caught.
Theft the victim was sleeping in the summer of 2018 in his mother’s detached house in Westend, Espoo. The woman woke up at night to go to the bathroom.
When he opened the bathroom door, to his surprise, he saw an unknown man there. The man hurried out through the second door of the bathroom and drove off in a brown Toyota Corolla.
The woman called the emergency center shortly after four at night. He then noticed that his wallet with his bank cards had disappeared from the living room.
Half an hour after the call to the emergency center, the stolen bank card was used for a few dozen purchases at a grocery store in Helsinki and an hour later at another.
When the shopper shown in the surveillance camera pictures was reached, he admitted he had made the purchase.
However, he denied having been in a detached house in Espoo and claimed to have received a bank card from acquaintances he had just met to buy tobacco.
The court did not believe the explanation. The man in the shop agreed with the clothes on the woman’s observations in Espoo.
District Court considered the theft aggravated because because of the theft, a man broke into a house where someone was sleeping alone.
The man was also charged with fraudulent means of payment, but his right was assessed as mild. For this reason, the case had already expired before it could reach court.
The man received sixty days in prison for aggravated theft. The sentence was reduced by several previous convictions.
