To this day, one of the most iconic logos in the world of video games is that of Mortal Kombat, which puts a kind of dragon as the protagonist that calls the fighters to combat. And with that, some fans wonder how it originated, which is why one of the creators of the franchise has already answered such a unique question.
In Twitter, John Tobias unveiled the original hand-drawn logo he created for the first game of Mortal Kombat and delved into his background. The confusion with resembling a seahorse, something that was a point of criticism at the time, was also cleared up a bit.

Here’s a recently discovered image of the first drawing of the #MortalKombat dragon icon. I designed the icon as a symbol of our game and its fictional tournament.
The inspiration for using a dragon as the fictional tournament symbol came from ‘Dragon Attack’, which was in dispute as the title of our game before the change. Here is my rough marker sketch of the marquee logo.
I had been thinking about creating an icon to represent the fictional tournament, but also to mark the game with a symbol…like Superman’s “S” or Batman’s bat symbol. I used the dragon from my cabinet side panel sketch to inform the look of the dragon icon as our symbol.
The final design of the icon was an attempt to replicate the yin yang symbol, which represented the balance of furies, a central part of early MK fiction.
It is worth commenting that this logo was almost ruined after the confusion of the sister of Tobias, who thought the dragon was a seahorse. Fortunately, however, the design remained intact.
