It remains practically unchangedCovid trend in Italy, which is traveling at low levels in this period. According to what emerges from weekly monitoring of the ISS-Ministry of Health control room, “there is a further, albeit limited, decrease in the incidence of new cases identified and reported with Sars-CoV-2 infection in Italy”. In practice the indicator is stationary: theincidence of Covid cases diagnosed and reported in the period from 28 March to 3 April is equal to 1 case per 100,000 inhabitants, therefore stable compared to the previous week (i.e. 21-27 March, when it was always 1 case per 100,000 inhabitants) (table 3) . The impact on hospitals is stable and limited. A predominance of viral strains attributable to the variant of interest JN.1in agreement with what has been observed in other countries.
However, it appears to be increasing, but still below the epidemic threshold, transmissibility index Rt, calculated with data updated to 3 April 2024 and based on cases with hospitalization: as of 26 March it was equal to 0.78 (range 0.63-0.94), slightly up compared to the previous week when it was 0.63 ( to March 19). However, as of April 3, theoccupancy of beds in the medical area by Covid-positive patients: it is equal to 1.2% (732 hospitalized), like the previous week. The occupancy of intensive care beds decreased slightly, equal to 0.2% (22 hospitalized), compared to the previous week (0.3% on March 27).
Returning to the weekly incidence of diagnosed and reported cases, this is substantially unchanged in most autonomous regions/provinces compared to the previous week. The highest incidence was reported in the Veneto region (1.8 cases per 100,000 inhabitants) and the lowest in Basilicata, where no new cases were reported in the week of observation. The median age at diagnosis is 61 years, stable compared to the previous week. The percentage of reinfections is around 40%, a slight decrease compared to the previous week. As for the picture of Covid variants circulating in the country, the data from the last four weeks available (19 February-17 March) confirm JN.1 as predominant.
