A Portuguese study, which analyzed more than 200 animals, found that cats are more likely to have symptoms and dogs have a higher viral load. So far there is no evidence that these bugs can infect humans. The report also pointed out that dogs and cats can become infected with SARS-CoV-2 by being in contact with infected humans.
“Let’s say we are dealing with a reverse zoonosis”, explains Isabel Fidalgo-Carvalho, a researcher at the Vasco da Gama Research Center in Coimbra, Portugal, and one of the authors of the study. “That is, it is a disease that has passed from animals to people and now reveals that it is equally capable of passing from people to animals.”
Published in Microorganisms, the study also had the participation of other researchers from the Universities of Porto and Coimbra. “It’s just that we were already studying the virus in animals with the ability to infect other species. The focus of our analysis was horses, but given the greater proximity of dogs and cats to humans, we chose to adjust the research”, continued the scientist.
The explanation for this contagion in the opposite direction, he explains, seems to be based on the confinements, in which the animals were the great support of many people – and this can be revealed as a prone moment for the virus to pass from the owners to the animals.
Assuming that, according to the data collected, cats are more likely to be infected, but dogs can transmit higher loads of the virus, Isabel Fidalgo-Carvalho is keen to highlight that the focus of the research is “to protect animals” – not recommending , therefore, any isolation of domestic animals. “What we could see, in these cases, is that the animals are most at risk”.
