The United States also has its own cow in the ditch for the media, writes HS’s Beijing correspondent Mari Manninen.

Russia has asked China for military equipment and support for its attack on Ukraine. This is what anonymous U.S. government sources say, the British newspaper said Financial Times Sunday night Finnish time.

According to sources, there would also be signs that China might be willing to help Russia.

Chinese diplomats said in their first reactions that they are not aware of anything like this.

Could it really be the case that China would start providing military assistance to Russia?

It would be a giant surprise.

China has not been willing to be involved in other military conflicts. It is against China’s foreign policy line. China has only cautiously learned peacekeeping in the world in recent years.

Would China then suddenly jump in to provide armed assistance to an attacker who has been rejected by the world and is feared to even ignite a nuclear war?

It’s hard to imagine China taking such a huge security policy risk.

What would the rest of the world be in when the authoritarian nuclear power began to militarily support an authoritarian invading state? World politics could linger in a new position for a long time.

Russian arming could well provoke a backlash against China that would have been unthinkable a month ago. The West and many other countries could join in real, tough economic sanctions against China.

The front against Russia is still a close and intense and certainly frightening force from China’s perspective.

China is always carefully calculating its economic benefits in its foreign policy. China cannot afford to get caught up in the economic teeth of the anti-Russian front. The economy needs to roll well in China so that the country’s leading Chinese Communist Party feels safe in power.

On Sunday, Russia said it was expecting financial help from China.

At least so far, China has not actually gone to help Russia, even financially. China has loudly opposed anti-Russian sanctions and said it will continue to trade with Russia as before.

In reality it seems that at least Chinese banks have become more cautious in their financing of Russia and are avoiding breaches of US and EU sanctions. Banks themselves fear being put on sanctions lists.

It has been just like the director of the Bank of Finland’s Research Institute for Economies in Transition Iikka Korhonen predicted HS in an interview: China cannot and does not want to save the Russian economy.

China is unlikely to help Russia significantly very quickly, says Deputy Director of the Polish Institute of International Affairs, which specializes in Chinese foreign policy Justyna Szczudlik on Thursday with a remote lecture for journalists.

In his view, however, the most important thing for China is to ensure that Vladimir Putin remains in power in Russia.

Szczudlikin the aid referred to was of a financial nature. But in light of the latest U.S. leaks, could one think that Beijing is already feared that Putin is falling into power? Could that be a big enough reason for China to even consider providing military aid?

China would not want its big neighbor to find itself in a completely chaotic situation. That would be a security threat. Putin and the leadership of the Chinese Communist Party also have friendly relations.

And the party that dominates China in a monopolistic way really doesn’t want an example of a great power where power would suddenly change, possibly even violently.

Must also recalls that the United States is leaking its own cow to the media in the ditch.

It may be that the information is true. Or they may not, or they may be discolored.

Perhaps the leakers want to push China towards agreeing to put pressure on its friend Russia to curb its attack or end hostilities in Ukraine.

Or even condemn the attack.

So far, China has claimed to be neutral, but in practice it has been more on the Russian side. China has not even agreed to call the attack an attack.

Relations between Russia and China have converged sharply in recent years, and in early February they jointly declared a deep partnership that “knows no borders”.

Earlier, U.S. sources claimed that China knew in advance about Russia’s intentions toward Ukraine. China would have asked Russia to wait over the Beijing Winter Olympics before starting its war. China vehemently denied this.

United States it hardly resents if its rival and challenger, China, appears to be ever closer to Russia, which has completely lost its reputation.

What is certain is that China is in a really embarrassing situation.
