If you have to explain to your partner for the umpteenth time why you want to send an email outside working hours, point out Johnny Koehoorn. The best man works for the Roadside Assistance and is so fascinated by his profession that he decided to honor his employer with a private car. He bought an old Volkswagen Golf Variant that once served with the Roadside Assistance and rebuilt it to ANWB specifications.
Koehoorn has worked for the Roadside Assistance since 1997. Because 'his ANWB heart is still on outside working hours', he decided to set up a project together with his son Robbert. The idea was to convert his son's old diesel Golf together for the Roadside Assistance. Unfortunately, Robbert died. 'I continued the project in his name. But so much work needed to be done on his Golf that I started looking for another copy,” says Koehoorn.
The discovery of the old Volkswagen Golf from the Roadside Assistance
During his search, Koehoorn came across several Golfjes that had often been given a second life abroad. 'Then I came across this Golf 3 Variant diesel from 1999, an original roadside agent that served in 't Harde. It has only driven 278,000 kilometers,” he says. That sounds like a lot, but as a roadside assistance car you will normally cover many more kilometers. What helps is that the Golf had been in storage for years.
Koehoorn continues: '[De Golf] was completely screwed up, so a long time went by putting it back together and finding the parts.” Thanks to De Gele Rijders – 'a club of idiots who support the Roadside Assistance' – Koehoorn found the right parts to make the Golf completely ready for service again. Even the equipment in the cabin and in the trunk space is complete.
The Golf will not be used again for roadside assistance. Although…
By the way, the proud owner does not use his Volkswagen Golf for his work at the Roadside Assistance. But when Koehoorn encounters a stranded car in his own time, the ANWB heart starts beating again: 'Last summer I was driving my Golf to the support point in Joure, when a car stopped in front of me. Of course you don't just let that happen, so I stopped. The people did not notice at all that they were being helped by a Road Supervisor who drove a vintage car. They could drive again and that's what it's all about.'

Koehoorn apparently liked the conversion so much that he has already started on the next project. Together with a friend, he works on a 1997 Volkswagen Polo 6N diesel, which served as a city roadside assistance service in 't Harde. We wish the men a lot of key fun.
