New blow to the Chinese car market. The United States takes another step towards approving a proposal to stop sales of connected cars with hardware and software produced in the Asian state. After the discussion in the past months, in fact, the US Department of Commerce has presented an official proposal that will be discussed with a public procedure and that could be approved within the first weeks of 2025.
US Fears About Chinese (and Other) Cars
The aim is to limit the risks to “national security” that would arise from vehicles with components produced in so-called hostile nations. In addition to China, Russia would also be affected by the measure. The Biden administration has in fact specified that these cars would be able to spy on Americans as well as US infrastructure. According to the White House, connected cars from this “can be controlled remotely, putting the privacy and safety of Americans on the road at risk. In the most extreme situations, a foreign adversary could shut down or take control of all of its vehicles in the United States, causing accidents or blocking roads.”. In reality this situation would be very unlikely but for the US it is still sufficient to carry forward this ban.
The timing would not be immediate, however, given that there are elections in the United States in November. The discussion could therefore lead to everything not being effective before January 2025. The rule would apply for software to Model Year 2027 vehicles, starting from 2026, while from January 2029 for Model Year 2030 vehicles as regards hardware. “The United States has ample evidence that China is attempting to plant malware on critical U.S. infrastructure.” – explained Jake Sullivan, national security adviser – We want to act before suppliers, automakers and parts manufacturers tied to China or Russia have a chance to expand into the United States.”
