The State Council for Sports Promotion has confirmed that a group of young athletes and their coaches, all participating in the CONADE 2024 Nationals in the archery discipline, experienced a serious incident in one of the elevators of their hotel in Baja California.
Eight underage athletes, accompanied by two adult coaches, boarded an elevator that, due to overcrowding, fell from the fifth floor. Fortunately, the elevator’s emergency brake system was activated, thus avoiding more serious consequences. The athletes and coaches were quickly rescued by Civil Protection and Firefighters, who assured that none of them suffered serious physical damage, although they did have a nervous breakdown.
Following this incident, the CONADE Nationals Organizing Committee has announced that it will reinforce security measures in all facilities to guarantee the integrity and safety of all participants. This preventive action seeks to prevent similar situations from putting athletes at risk.
This event highlights the importance of safety in sports competitions, especially in large-scale events such as the CONADE Nationals. The rapid intervention of emergency teams and the proper functioning of the elevator’s safety systems were crucial to avoiding a tragedy.
With an eye on the well-being of young talents in national sports, CONADE and local authorities will continue working to offer a safe and conducive environment for practicing sports. The CONADE 2024 Nationals will go ahead, with a renewed focus on the safety and care of all participating athletes.
