An October 9, Lower Saxony elects a new state parliament. In the second largest German federal state in terms of area, more than six million eligible voters are called upon to determine the at least 135 members of the state parliament.
Prime Minister Stephan Weil (SPD) campaigned aggressively for red-green and does not want to continue the current governing grand coalition.
The gap between the CDU and the SPD has recently become smaller. CDU top candidate Bernd Althusmann expects a neck-and-neck race with the Social Democrats in the October 9 election. He was open to both a continuation of the grand coalition and a black-green alliance. However, the Greens have recently expressed skepticism about an alliance with the CDU.
The election campaign is overshadowed by the national political debate about the consequences of the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine. In addition to energy policy, there are also major differences between the positions of the parties on the subject of transport.
Voters can use the Wahl-O-Mat to compare their political stance with the party programs based on 38 theses. All 14 parties that are running for elections in Lower Saxony have commented on the theses.
After the CDU was still eight to nine percentage points behind the SPD at the beginning of the year, the gap has recently narrowed somewhat. The Christian Democrats remain in two new surveys at 26 and 27 percent respectively. However, with 29 and 31 percent, the SPD is now worse off than it was in the spring.
The Greens are in the polls at 19 and 22 percent, the AfD improves slightly to seven and eight percent, respectively, the FDP comes to six percent. The left would miss the re-entry into the state parliament with three or four percent. The polling institutes infratest dimap on behalf of the NDR and Forsa on behalf of 43 daily newspapers in Lower Saxony had asked.
The Wahl-O-Mat Lower Saxony was created in cooperation between the Lower Saxony State Center for Civic Education and the Federal Agency for Civic Education. The theses were developed together with young voters and experts from science and education.
The first Wahl-O-Mat was launched in 2002. The online service is used before European, federal and state elections. With the tool, users can click through theses on various policy areas authorized by the parties. These are then compared with the positions from the election programs. At the end, users learn how many matches they have with each party.
