Leclerc at the foot of the podium starting eleventh in 2023
Charles Leclerc today he will start from the same position from which he started a year ago in the Canadian GP. The Monegasque Ferrari driver started eleventh and managed to finish the GP in fourth position ahead of Carlos Sainz who started eighth thanks to a successful strategy that allowed Leclerc to dribble around a DRS train of several cars.
Today – weather permitting – Ferrari will have to do the same after yesterday’s complicated Qualifying which saw Leclerc and Sainz not make it through Q2. The two drivers of the Scuderia di Maranello will start paired on the sixth row, but the Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur does not lose hope: “Everyone struggled with the tyres, to the point that even George Russell’s pole position was achieved on used tyres, but we had more difficulty than the others and weren’t able to turn on the tires at the right time. We will analyze everything in detail but we won’t give up because we know that the points will be awarded on Sunday. As for the race, we also have to look at what the weather will offer us, which remains a big unknown. Recovering positions is not impossible and we will give our best, as we also managed to do last year when we started from the back and completed a good comeback“.
Also Carlos Sainz he is optimistic: “I remain optimistic: I think we can bring home a good amount of points. We’ll give it our all“, the words of the Spaniard who are echoed by Leclerc: “Tire management will play an important role and that is what we will have to focus on to try to make up positions. With uncertain weather conditions there could be opportunities that will be essential to be able to seize“.
