In the social media, the series can be watched in a way reminiscent of sofa potatoes, but what programs “previewers” comment on can be influenced by themselves, writes journalist Piritta Räsänen.
One or two a year ago I started watching the American love reality The bachelor of your dreams. As the series progressed, I wondered who would finally get the last rose, and watched in frustration at the rivalry between the rivals.
However, my viewing experience was different than before, as instead of traditional TV, I only watched the series through Youtube videos made by fans.
The idea is practically the same as In sofa potatoes, but on social media you can define more precisely which program you want “previewers” to comment on. Fans ’videos not only act as a mirror to their own viewing experience but override the original work.
For example The bachelor of my dreams I watch two types of videos: Whit & Ry on the channel, two sisters react spontaneously to a series of events while watching new episodes, and Bachelor Fantake The channel’s summary videos also analyze trailers and make bets on the winner.
The concept sounds absurd at first: you can’t condense periods of an hour and a half to about fifteen minutes! However, it soon becomes clear that yes you can. The viewing experience is entertaining, and you get the full picture of what happens in a love reality.
In Finland, videos can be watched on the same principle, for example Juufinon the channel. I haven’t seen the latest Big Brother than individual episodes in addition to the channel’s videos.
Viewing method has also spread beyond reality TV series.
My own favorite of these is Riverdale. In the third production season of the teen drama series, the absurdity of the plot twists went into the so-called emotions and sadness of my friend, so it no longer makes sense to watch the series. On his tip, I closed Netflix and switched to Youtube again.
In the Somevideos, others also realized how the murder mystery that had begun at Riverdale High School had turned into a disgraceful soap opera. In the fan videos, the characters, events and illogicalities of the series were joked without sparingly. Indeed, the annoying plot twists became the best content in the series.
Somesta series or movies that would otherwise be “watched” are well-suited for watching. I’ll probably never watch Netflix’s romantic comedies like Tall Girl (2019) or He’s All That (2021), but I enjoyed the reaction videos made from them immensely.
I also continue to enjoy immense series and feature films. Couch potatoes however, there is a reason for its continued popularity from year to year. The pre-chewed content is easy to enjoy, brainless entertainment at the end of a long day.
It’s easy to curl up.
