In a statement, the Colombian Embassy in the United States called on Republican Congresswoman María Elvira Salazar, who expressed her support for the Argentine president's offense. Javier Mileiagainst his Colombian counterpart, Gustavo Petro, whom he called a “terrorist murderer.”
“President Gustavo Petro was democratically elected by Colombians and both his dignity and that of his position must be respected,” said the Embassy in its communication addressed to Congresswoman Salazar.
In the message, this office demanded that issues that compromise the dignity of President Petro must be carried out with due deference, attention and “away from insulting and emotionally charged language.”
“The Embassy of Colombia in the United States formally calls on Representative María Salazar so that, in the spirit of mutual respect and consideration for the relationship between our countries, she returns to the level of constructive debate, enriching democracy, worthy of strategic partners,” said the Embassy.
María Elvira Salazar, of Cuban origin and very critical of the leftist governments of Latin America, wrote on social networks that she “completely agrees” with Milei's words, which led to a diplomatic crisis between Colombia and Argentina.
In this publication, Salazar added an old video of herself, prior to Petro's electoral victory, in which she used offensive language against the current Colombian president.
In an interview with CNN in Spanish, the Argentine president called Petro a “terrorist murderer” and described the Mexican president as “ignorant.” Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
After these words, the Colombian Government ordered the expulsion of diplomats from the Argentine Embassy in Bogotá.
Meanwhile, López Obrador responded to Milei and pointed out that he does not understand “how Argentines, being so intelligent, voted for someone who is not accurate, who despises the people.”
Petro added to this situation: “I believe that Milei seeks to destroy, or at least postpone, the project of Latin American integration. Today the Argentine people suffer and poverty increases.”
The Colombian president added that “despite the insults, we must preserve the project of unity, in diversity, of Latin America and the Caribbean.
