After drawing 2-2 against New Zealand this Tuesday in San José, the Colombian National Team U-20 secured first place in group B Women’s World Cup which is played in Costa Rica.
Linda Caycedo was the great figure of the party that gave the classification to those led by Carlos Paniagua, by scoring the two goals, both of great billing, in a game that Colombia suffered after the expulsion of Yirleidys Quejada, in the 41st minute.
“When the expulsion comes, I have to sacrifice Mariana Muñoz and cover the position of Yurleidys with Yunaira (López), and make a double line of four, a 4-4-1, and I think they did it quite well, the team had a lot of order and with one player less we went and looked for the opposite goal”, explained Paniagua.
Brazil, Colombia’s next rival
Colombia will face a team they know very well in the quarterfinals. Their next rival will be Brazil, which finished in second place in group A, after beating Costa Rica 5-0 on Tuesday.
The win, however, was not enough for those led by Jonas Urias to win the area. First place went to Spain, who beat Australia 3-0 to secure the top spot on goal difference.
Brazil was coming off a goalless draw against Spain and beating Australia 2-0 in its first two appearances at the U-20 Women’s World Cup.
The background between Colombia and Brazil in the U-20
It will be the first time that Colombia and Brazil meet in a World Cup in this category, but not the first time they play this year. They already did it in South American U-20 from Chile, in a controversial match.
On the first date of the final phase, the two teams met in La Serena. The ‘canarinhas’ won 3-0, but the first goal was scored by a handball by Giovaninha that Paraguayan referee Zulma Quiñónez did not notice. Then, an own goal from Liced Serna and a goal from Isa sealed the victory.
“We have already played with Brazil, it is a very strong team, they are the champions of the nine South American teams that have been made, we know them well”, recalled Paniagua.
Colombia will try to break a losing streak: they have never beaten or scored goals against Brazil in this category. He lost five times: 2-0 in 2010, 1-0 in 2012, 6-0 in the final phase of 2014, 4-0 in 2018 and 3-0 in 2022. And he drew two draws: 0-0 in the first round, in 2014, and also goalless equality in 2015.
