Colombia National Team: true story of homophobic cry that stopped the match against Mexico

A deplorable homophobic cry from the fans forced this Tuesday’s game, between the Colombian National Team and the Mexican teamstopped for a few minutes.

As could be seen in the transmission of the commitment, the aggression was against the goalkeeper David Ospinamoments before he made one of his serves.

The image was especially surprising considering the great reception that the Colombian goalkeeper received before the commitment.

However, what happened does not respond to a personal issue but to a structural situation that exists in Mexico.

The story behind the insult suffered by Ospina

To date, it has been impossible to determine exactly the origin of the cry that has already motivated sanctions from different entities in Mexican soccer.

According to a local theory, the insult to the goalkeeper would have arisen in American football games in northern Mexico.

Back then, when the kicker made his call, the crowd would yell, “Ehhh, bang!”

However, the meaning would have been disrupted to the level of reaching the derogatory mood with which it is used today.

The first time that it is remembered in its offensive version has to do with a game of the Mexican National Team against the United States, during a pre-Olympic tournament.

At the time, apparently the fans of the Atlas, a local group, began to shout “uh!” every time the rival goalkeeper took out.

Then they added homophobic slur.

The last Fifa sanction for the scream occurred in mid-2021, after a game of the Mexican U-23 team. At that time, it was a financial fine and a sanction of two games without an audience.

To date there have been at least 17 punishments of various kinds against Mexico for this issue.
