National Institute of Meteorology issues “orange warning” of danger for the southern region and south of Mato Grosso do Sul
O Inmet (National Institute of Meteorology) issued an orange “danger” alert for the sharp decline in temperature in the South Region and in the south of Mato Grosso do Sul. The phenomenon should be noticed from Monday (May 13, 2024) to 4th (May 15) and can cause thermometers to register temperatures up to 5°C lower.
According to the institute, the rains this Sunday (May 12) were more concentrated in much of Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina. Starting at night, the concentration will be in the northern half of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, including the capital Porto Alegre. “And in the southernmost part of the state, temperatures are starting to drop from today onwards”Inmet meteorologist Heráclio Alves told Agência Brasil.
Alves stated that this drop in temperatures is due to the cold front that will form on Monday (May 13). As it advances across the ocean, east of the Southeast region, it also brings rain to the east of São Paulo. He highlighted that shortly after the cold front passes, colder and drier air arrives.
“It reduces rainfall and causes temperatures to drop. On Wednesday (May 15), the entire South region, in addition to the south of São Paulo and Mato Grosso do Sul, will see a very sharp drop in temperature”he said.
In the 3 southern states, the temperature should get lower. In Rio Grande do Sul, the meteorologist pointed out that the temperature could be below 4ºC in the coming days, especially in the early hours and mornings.
“So, the rain will be decreasing from tomorrow onwards, mainly in Rio Grande do Sul, but there will be a cold front that will form during the early hours of the morning. It is still raining in the north of the state, but, as the day goes on, the rain moves towards Santa Catarina and Paraná and gives way to this colder mass, with little rain, but with very low temperatures. It’s cold”warned Heráclio Alves.
This Sunday afternoon (May 12), in a large part of Rio Grande do Sul, the maximum temperature is already below 25º, while in the extreme south of the State, on the border with Uruguay, it will be around 12º to 15º.
“At night, (the low temperature) starts to spread to other areas of the state. Today, there is already a very significant drop in temperature, both due to the rain, but also due to a colder mass that is advancing over Argentina, Uruguay, and reaching Rio Grande do Sul”said the expert.
From Monday (May 13th), in the early hours of the morning and throughout the day, the rain becomes more concentrated in the north of Rio Grande do Sul and begins to advance through Santa Catarina and Paraná, between Monday and Tuesday. Temperatures will also drop in other areas of Rio Grande do Sul, in Santa Catarina, Paraná and also in the south and west of Mato Grosso do Sul.
