The oppressive heat of the Singapore GP
Lando Norris, with his hands out of the cockpit to get some air on the straights and then so upset after the race that he gladly accepted a water bomb from David Coulthard during the interviews, wasn’t the only one “victim” of the oppressive heat of the Singapore GP. At Marina Bay all the drivers suffered from the high temperatures and high humidity that have always made the “Monaco of Southeast Asia” the most physically difficult stage of the entire F1 calendar. The one who fared the worst was the one with the least experience of all, that Frank Colapinto who, after a flying start, finished the race 11th after many laps battling with Sergio Perez’s Red Bull.
Franco Colapinto’s slight illness
The Argentine driver, at his third GP in Formula 1, has in fact he felt slightly unwell after the checkered flag with stomach pains probably related to the state of dehydration. However, nothing serious for the 21-year-old Williams driver who, according to what the team principal said after the race James Vowleshe immediately felt better after drinking and a few minutes of rest at the end of the race.
“It’s a shame – Colapinto then declared – not being in the top 10 after a points start in the early stages of the race. I think it was possible to stay in the top 10 and keep Perez behind, as it is difficult to overtake on the track. However, we did not defend ourselves as we could have and, by stopping one lap too late, we lost a position. That’s how it is, we win and lose together as a team. Tyre management was good throughout the race, but I had some physical problems that limited me. Overall, 11th place is still a decent result, and it was a very positive race to capitalize on what I have learned so far.”.
Frustration for Alex Albon
A day to forget instead for Alex Albon. The Thai, in fact, complained at the start about his teammate’s hard braking on the inside of turn 1 which made him lose ground, but he was then forced to retire due to a problem with the power unit: “It’s a shame it ended like this because I think we had a points-worthy car. Unfortunately, an engine cooling problem ended my race but, after a difficult start, where I was forced to go a bit wide, it would have been difficult to recover. Sometimes you have a car that is not able to fight for points and when you do it is a great satisfaction, but this weekend was the opposite. The car was super fast and we should have been in the top 10, so it’s frustrating. We’ll see how we can improve for the remaining races.”.
