SAO PAULO (Reuters) – Green coffee exports from Brazil reached 208,500 tonnes (3.47 million bags of 60 kg) in February, up 9.16% from the same month in 2021, the first advance in the year. year-on-year comparison as wheat shipments soared, federal government data showed on Thursday.
The volumes shipped had been affected by logistical problems, such as lack of space on ships, and lower grain supply after a low harvest in 2021, according to information from exporters.
But prices, which rose more than 80% year-on-year in February, may have given some boost. In terms of revenue, foreign sales totaled US$828 million, more than double that of the same month in 2021.
June was the last month in which foreign sales rose, when the largest global coffee exporter shipped around 3 million bags, versus 2.3 million bags in the same month of 2020, according to data from the Foreign Trade Secretariat (Secex ).
In the case of wheat – a product that Brazil is a traditional importer – shipments made in February totaled 836.6 thousand tons, against 121.3 thousand registered a year earlier.
In revenue, the result obtained by the cereal was even more expressive, going from 23.96 million dollars in February 2021 to 246.5 million dollars last month.
Brazil has been expanding wheat exports since the end of last year and in December there were already bulky shipments scheduled for January and February, with the harvest of a record crop in 2021 and the favorable exchange rate boosting business.
The cereal shipped by Brazilians is used, in general, for the production of flour for biscuits or for animal feed, and its main buyers are countries in Africa and Asia.
