The reason for the evacuation was an accident involving a member of the cargo ship’s crew.
On Friday snowstorm delayed trains on the mainland and hampered traffic, but the Western Finland Coast Guard caused a degree of snowfall.
The Border Guard rescue helicopter Rajaheko 100 received a request for assistance from the Estonian Maritime Rescue Area JRCC Tallinn.
The cargo ship on a voyage to Russia had an accident off Hiiumaa and the patient needed evacuation.
“For one reason or another, the Estonian Sea Rescue Region’s own helicopter was not available. I don’t know if there was a technical problem or if it affected the crew, ”says the director of maritime rescue Kristian Hermansson. Hermansson himself was not on duty during the operation.
There are similar requests for help every year. “On the one hand and the other, of course, we help when needed,” Hermansson says.
The director of maritime rescue in turn filmed On the Squadron’s Twitter account very bad weather.
“Winter storm, dark, highest waves eight meters away,” he wrote.
According to Hermansson, the evacuee was taken to Helsinki for treatment. He was not life-threatening, but the injury needed immediate treatment.
“The poor visibility was that the helicopter did not get back to Turku immediately, but had to wait a couple of hours in Helsinki for the weather to clear,” says Hermansson.
The wind in the sea area was at least 15 meters per second from the south on Friday, with even more gusts.
“Yes, that’s where the cap goes,” Hermansson jokes.
