In an Instagram video, ‘Climate Shakira’ Anja Windl presents her arrest warrant as a snack for a donkey. This is causing a stir.
Munich/Austria – The climate activists of the last generation are currently a hotly debated topic. While some praise their efforts, others are critical of the actions of the so-called “climate gluers”. One of the most famous activists alongside Greta Thunberg and Luisa Neubauer is Anja Windl, who is nicknamed “Climate Shakira”. The German is currently facing unpleasant consequences as she has to serve a prison sentence in her adopted home of Austria. She shares her opinion with the world in a provocative Instagram video.
In the video, Anja Windl can be seen standing in a pasture with a donkey on a sunny day. She is holding a stack of printed documents in her hand, which she offers the animal as a snack. The donkey enthusiastically pounces on the papers and starts nibbling on them. “Does primary arrest taste good?” asks the climate activist in baby talk. “No, it doesn’t? Isn’t that a bit sh**ty? What are we going to do with it?”
Climate Shakira with provocative donkey action: arrest notice simply fed
It quickly becomes clear that the “donkey food” is the arrest warrant that Anja has probably just received. The donkey Lara seems to find it tasty and eats a good portion of the official letter. “Climate Shakira” writes about the video: “I think eating primary leftovers is legitimate.” There is obviously a typo here, it should of course say “primary arrest”.
Anja comments on the video provocatively: “Do you also believe in locking up peaceful protesters as much as Lara does?”, drawing a comparison to her own situation. She also shares the video in her Instagram stories and comments on it: “Strong statement from Lara today on prison sentences for peaceful protesters.”
“I don’t think I can take the primary arrest. Ate donkeys. There’s nothing you can do,” she adds cheerfully. Many of her followers applaud the climate activist for this action. “Meal Lara! I hope you eat healthier otherwise!” one commented, while another would like to borrow Lara: “Where did you find Lara? Maybe we can let them organically destroy more useless court files against climate activists.”
However, there are also many voices that criticize the “Climate Shakira” action. “This lady has a knocker, but not a small one!” says one follower, annoyed about the destruction of the documents. Others are even more critical: “A minority does not accept the majority. Instead of starting legitimate referendums, there is blackmail, coercion and terror. Go home to Germany.” There are also concerns that printed paper could be unhealthy for the donkey. In the video, Lara only eats the unprinted corner of the notice; whether this is healthy for the donkey remains unclear.
Critics angry: Climate activist Anja Windl sparks discussion online
It is also uncertain whether the destruction of the primary arrest will actually save Anja from imprisonment. However, it is not likely. According to krone.at However, an official complaint has already been lodged against the primary prison sentences. In Austrian administrative criminal law, the primary penalty is the most severe punishment, which provides for a prison sentence instead of a fine. This lasts at least twelve hours; in the current case of the climate activists it is a matter of a few days in prison.
Die letzte Generation criticizes the primary punishment as a new tactic by the authorities to prevent their protests. “They want to prevent us from drawing attention to the unpleasant truth of the climate catastrophe by imposing immediate imprisonment,” says spokeswoman Anna Freund.
Anja Windl was already on trial in Munich. Windl was sentenced to a fine of 600 euros for a blockade that Last Generation carried out on Einsteinstrasse in August 2023.
