Claudio Caniggia, investigated for reporting abuse and mistreatment of his wife

Claudio Paul Caniggia, former star of the Argentine soccer team, was summoned to give an investigative statement in the criminal case that began after the complaint of his ex-wifeMariana Nannis, for physical attacks, threats and rape.

This was resolved by Judge Pablo Ormaechea, by granting a request from prosecutor Carlos Velarde. The hearing will take place on March 22, through the Zoom platform.

“Caniggia is affected by the state of suspicion and for this reason I will have to request that he be summoned to an investigative statement”, affirmed prosecutor Velarde in his opinion, to which the Argentine newspaper ‘La Nación’ had access.

‘Your head will roll’

According to the complaint by Nannis, who is represented by the lawyer Carlos Broitman, the reported events occurred on May 5, 2018 in one of the rooms of the Faena Hotel in Puerto Madero, when Caniggia wanted to have sex and she refused.

“I’m going to kill you motherfucker”, Caniggia would have told Nannis, according to the complaint.

Then, the former soccer player would have tried to punch him in the facebut his then wife covered her face with her hands.

At the time he described the facts that are attributed to the former forward of Boca and River, among other teams, prosecutor Velarde maintained that after the blows, Caniggia sexually subdued Nannis.

After being the victim of the sexual attack, Nannis would have told Caniggia that she was going to report him and would have received as a response: “If you make the complaint your head will roll. If you walk out that door I’m going to kill you. Motherfucker, don’t leave me alone here”.

In the file, Nannis’s friends testified as witnesses who ratified what the victim said in her complaint.

“As we can see, statements have been received from the people the victim named as witnesses, who indirectly accompanied her account, assuring, under oath, that they had been aware of Caniggia’s violence against Nannis for some time and had seen the marks on the body that she said had been produced by Caniggia”, explained the prosecutor when substantiating the request to make an investigative statement.

One of the witnesses maintained that she had been with Caniggia and Nannis at a marriage celebration in the hours prior to the reported events and that she returned from the celebration in the couple’s car. She claimed that the former soccer player was aggressive. After reaching their destination and after several attempts to talk to her friend, she answered the phone, but she did not talk about her and managed to hear the phrase: “Motherfucker, I’m going to kill you”.

The representative of the Public Ministry maintained that, in addition to the testimonies, there is a “risk report” elaborated by professionals from the Office of Domestic Violence (OVD) of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation that valued Nannis’s complaint as a situation of “long-standing and high-risk gender-based violence at that time based on a series of indicators: chronicity and tenor of violence, psycho-emotional vulnerability [sic] of the complainant, economic damage and her marked dependence and the repetition of threats throughout the marriage that would have made it difficult to request help”.

After the opinion of the Public Ministry, Nannis presented a brief before Judge Ormaechea. With the representation of the lawyer Broitman, the complainant maintained: “Considering that the state of suspicion referred to in article 294 of the National Criminal Procedure Code has been met, and without prejudice to the evidence that may be attached to this file in the future, We hereby come to accompany the request for inquiry made by the prosecutor regarding the accused as required by this part in a timely manner, requesting that a hearing be set urgently”.
