Guaymas, Mexico.- Virtual President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum pledged to continue with the programs and projects promised by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to the Yaqui people.
“We are going to continue with everything that was mentioned here, not only in the demands, requirements, and proposals that have been made, but also in the way in which we are going to work, always consulting, working together,” said the Morena member.
“I promise to continue with the constitutional reform that was proposed by you. We will achieve it now that we have a qualified majority in Congress and continue with the Justice Plan for the Yaqui people and with the Justice plans for all the indigenous peoples of our country.”
The constitutional and legal reform initiative on the rights of indigenous and Afro-Mexican peoples aims to establish the characteristics for the exercise of self-determination and autonomy of indigenous peoples and communities throughout the country, as well as to recognize them as subjects of public law with the legal capacity to directly receive and manage public resources.
“We will continue to honor the history of resistance and dignity of the Yaqui people, the indigenous and Afro-Mexican peoples, and recognize their inalienable rights. I reaffirm that commitment, my commitment to continue working with you. Never again will Mexico be without its indigenous peoples, never again will Mexico deny its own roots, never again will Mexico fail to provide justice for any Mexican man or woman who lives with the Yaqui people,” Sheinbaum said.
President López Obrador’s successor was received at the ramada where the governors of the eight Yaqui towns make decisions about their projects.
For the first time, a woman took her place among the leaders as the next President.
There, the rulers applauded the signing of a decree for the restitution of 12,978 new hectares for the Yaqui people, bringing the total to 45,476 restored to the Yaquis.
Fifteen thousand hectares more than the original decree signed by Lázaro Cárdenas and more than double the commitment signed in the Justice Plan.
Progress is also being made on the construction of the aqueduct that will provide the Yaqui people with 200 liters per second, in addition to the administration of Irrigation District 018, which is nearing completion.
The federal government provided more than 160 billion pesos for various projects such as the Yaqui People’s University, school cafeterias for indigenous children, rural medical units and health centers, in addition to support for agricultural, fishing and livestock activities.
López Obrador promised to return before the end of his government with two conditions: the first, that he be accompanied by Sheinbaum and the second, that Conagua complete the aqueduct and the irrigation district.
“We will also take advantage of the opportunity to inaugurate the University and the necessary resources, also to review all the housing projects that are being built, the water network for the towns and we will take advantage of the opportunity to inaugurate the IMSS Bienestar hospital,” promised the Tabasco native.
“I am very pleased to be with you and that there is nothing to worry about, the replacement is guaranteed and there will be continuity in all the welfare programs for our people (…) (Sheinbaum) has been fighting for justice since she was young, she is not a posh girl, she is understandable, she always fought for the poor, for the needy, for just causes.”
