Milan is taking action against wild nightlife and taking drastic consequences. Among other things, a regulation is intended to ban ice cream after midnight.
Milan – Holidaymakers love “la dolce vita” in Italy. The relaxed attitude to life magically attracts many people. Milan is considered the fashion and cultural metropolis in “la bella Italia”. In some neighborhoods the bear dances late into the night, much to the annoyance of residents. In addition to party noise, fights and excessive violence are also a problem. Now Milan's mayor is taking action with a new regulation.
The rules affect pizza, water and ice cream and will come into force before Pentecost (May 19, 2024). So when many holidaymakers from home and abroad come to Milan. There is a hail of criticism.
Milan bans pizza, ice cream and water after midnight in 'red zone'
The city says new measures will apply from May 17th to November 4th, 2024 Milan with. Twelve areas, so-called “red zones”, are affected, including the notorious nightlife districts of Brera, Navigli and Darsena. Then the following rules apply:

Traders are taking to the barricades against the regulation, reports the Italian newspaper IlGiorno. Criticize the harsh crackdown sharply.
“A measure that will do nothing against the wild nightlife. It will affect citizens, tourists and companies,” quoted Il Giorno the Secretary General of the Milan Traders Association Marco Barbieri. In particular, the ban on the sale and take-away of food and drinks of any kind would be met with protest.
It is incomprehensible to restrict the use of the outdoor area at these hours, complains a spokesman for the association of public companies in Milan EPAM. Shortening the hours will not solve the problem, said Carlo Squeri, according to the newspaper. People would continue to drink and talk in the streets.
Hope for Italy's citizens and vacationers: Milan's regulation is not yet finalized
It is still unclear whether the city of Milan's new ordinance against wild nightlife will actually be enforced, writes the Italian news agency Ansa. There are a number of suggestions that need to be examined. The city itself states on its website that public and private interest groups have until May 5 to submit comments. However, the measures were already decided last summer.
Similar rules already applied to the Porta Venezia district of Milan for 30 days last October. The sale and take-away of food and drinks were prohibited from midnight to 6 a.m. on weekdays, the news station reports Rai. Apparently with success.
If the regulation against wild nightlife goes through, Milan, the capital of Lombardy, could be a model for other cities in Italy. It wouldn't be the first time: Turin followed suit when it came to banning smoking. (ml)
