Mexico City.- The Center for Economic Research and Teaching (CIDE) will install a branch of the United Nations University (UNU) on its campus, where researchers will develop studies on economic integration, reported José Antonio Romero, general director of CIDE.
Following the signing of a memorandum of understanding, Romero said that the United Nations, through its autonomous body, will establish its stay at the CIDE.
“We call it a hub, just like the one we call airports. Here we will be able to collaborate with other Mexican institutions, with other institutions abroad on issues that can benefit not only Mexico, but other countries. That is an honor for the country and an honor for the CID,” he said.
“It will be a seed project that we will start with a contribution from five researchers from CIDE. We will also expect researchers from the United Nations.”
The purpose, he stressed, is the development of joint research, courses and seminars.
–What kind of investigations are you going to do?–, he was asked.
“We are interested in learning from Asian experiences. These are countries that were in extreme poverty 50 years ago and now they are among the leading powers in the UN. What can we learn from them to accelerate our development in Mexico? There is a lot to learn and they will support us in that regard,” he replied.
“How to plan for the substitution of imports of Chinese products so that they can be produced in Mexico in a more efficient manner; for example, research would be in this sense, so that in the future Mexico can produce its own products and not depend on China.”
He said that the UN will also finance research projects and stays in other countries for Mexican researchers.
Romero said that there was also support from the Japan Cooperation Institute.
For his part, Philippe De Lombaerde, director of UNU, Institute on Comparative Regional Integration Studies, said that the signing of the memorandum is important because it creates a framework for collaboration with the institution he presides and which is located in Belgium.
