A Christmas message from the youth department of Forum for Democracy has aroused resentment among prominent FvD member Theo Hiddema. Today the JFVD wished everyone via Twitter a ‘Happy Yuletide and a Merry Christmas’.
This provoked a reaction from FvD Member of Parliament Theo Hiddema. Yule is an old Germanic festival in which the dead are commemorated and fertility is celebrated. However, it is also a festival celebrated by the Nazis during World War II. As in Camp Westerbork in 1942, Hiddema points out in a tweet in response to the JFVD message.

Hiddema writes: ‘You too all that is blessed! Where do you celebrate the Yule festival? The last official celebrations were held in camp Westerbork. Perhaps a suitable location for JFVD to breathe new life into such a tradition that stimulates the healthy folk feeling. Houzee!’
In an explanation, Hiddema says: ,,If we have been celebrating this Joelfeest in our country for years, then this might have been appropriate, but there is no mortal in the Netherlands who knows what this entails at all. That club only does this to pursue a certain association and that makes me sick. If you continue to put the suffering of the Jews into perspective, you will have trouble with me.”

Barely two weeks ago, party leader Thierry Baudet had to delete four tweets, in which he compared the corona policy with the Holocaust and the Second World War. The Israel Information and Documentation Center (CIDI), the Central Jewish Consultation Committee and four Jewish survivors of the Second World War had filed summary proceedings against him. The judge banned him from using the subject any longer in his protest against the corona policy. Baudet announced ‘certainly to appeal’ against the ruling.
Hiddema, however, does not have a good word for it. “I haven’t spoken to Thierry about those tweets or that case, but I’m sure he knows he can’t count on one word of understanding from my side. To drag the holocaust by the hair is sickening. Those associations are evidence of an empathic defect in abundance.”
JFVD was also previously discredited when it came to anti-Semitic messages in WhatsApp groups. This was followed by revelations from party members that Baudet would have expressed himself anti-Semitic during a dinner.
A spokesperson for the Forum for Democracy could not be reached for comment.
