Christian Soave, garbage collector and football coach, has been promoted to Serie C with Caldiero Terme: “Even if I coach in Serie C, I won’t leave my job”
Cristian Soave has become a small phenomenon on the web for its story of social redemption which has moved thousands of football lovers. The 49-year-old is an ecological operator from Serit, a company that has been working in the field of environmental hygiene services in the province of Verona for over twenty years. Soave, who starts driving the garbage truck at 4 every morning, is also the coach of the Caldiero Termenewly promoted football club in Serie C on May 5th against all odds, compared to more highly rated teams like the Piacenza.
A promotion that the garbage collector technician wanted to dedicate to Elizabeth, the mother of his three children who had to succumb to the disease four years ago. “With the Virtus Ciserano, the match we won in the last minute – he tells Tuttosport – my parents came to the stadium together with my children. They come rarely, it was a special occasion. Right after that Filiciotto he scored in the 95th minute, my son came to hug me and told me: mum scored that goal from up there. I couldn’t handle the emotion and ran into the locker room in tears. but I really think that goal belongs to her.”
The club’s entry into professionalism will not mark a radical change in Soave’s everyday life. “Even though I will coach in Serie C, I am not quitting my job. I thank the company for their availability but I am not giving up my job, it is important.”
