“We should always continue to prioritize people and their lives, adhere to scientific rigor and dynamic zero (Covid) policy, and end the epidemic as soon as possible,” Xi said, according to the official CCTV network.
During a meeting of top Chinese leaders, he stressed that his country should “raise the level of scientifically accurate prevention and control and continue to improve disease control measures.”
Just three weeks ago, China – which is among the last countries to adhere to the policy of preventing even one infection from the epidemic – was recording less than a hundred injuries per day, but the number has become more than a thousand per day a week ago.
The virus appeared in the Chinese city of Wuhan in late 2019 and the authorities succeeded in controlling it by imposing strict measures, and no related deaths were announced for more than a year.
But the fast-transmitted mutant Omicron has become a challenge to the zero-corona strategy, which led to the closure of cities, including Schengen, while severe restrictions were imposed.
Xi called for “strengthening key technological sectors such as vaccination, rapid testing and drug development research.”
He pointed to the need to increase “prevention and control directives” for the most affected areas and to “quickly control local groups where the epidemic is spreading.”
He also stressed the need to strengthen prevention measures at entry points with the high number of infections among people coming from abroad.
