On Friday (21) China asked US President Joe Biden for “prudence” after his statements about defending Taiwan in the event of an attack on Beijing.
“On issues related to its fundamental interests, such as sovereignty and territorial integrity, China leaves no room for compromise,” said Wang Wenbin, a spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry.
The US government “should act and speak with prudence on the Taiwan issue,” the spokesman added.
On Thursday, President Joe Biden said the United States would defend Taiwan if the island is attacked by China, which considers it part of its territory.
“Yes,” he replied to CNN when asked whether he would defend Taiwan.
“We are committed to this,” he added.
Biden’s comments go against the long-standing US policy of “strategic ambiguity” in which Washington helps Taiwan build its defenses, but without committing to stepping out in support of the island.
