LONDON (Reuters) – China attaches great importance to combating climate change, but has not yet announced whether President Xi Jinping will attend the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26), said China’s special climate envoy. Xie Zhenhua on Tuesday.
Asked by Reuters whether Xi will attend the summit in person, via video call or not, Xie replied: “We still need to wait for information (from) the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and only after they make an announcement will we tell you.”
Last week, British Queen Elizabeth said she was angry at global leaders who talk about climate change and do little or nothing to address global warming, and added that it was still unclear who will attend COP26 in Glasgow.
As host of the summit, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has referred to the meeting as one of the last great chances to cool the planet, and he hoped the event would be a showcase for his aspirations for global leadership.
US President Joe Biden and Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison will attend. The Kremlin has yet to say whether Russian President Vladimir Putin will go.
Xi, the most powerful Chinese leader since Mao Zedong, has not left his country since the start of the new coronavirus pandemic, but he has participated in videoconferences with other leaders.
