Chinese authorities will now demand that the new apps from the Tencent gaming and messaging group be officially approved before they reach the market, state media reported.
The information came as the Chinese government moves to tighten control over the important digital industry, claiming its companies have become too big and powerful.
Groups such as Tencent or Alibaba have been targeted with sanctions by the authorities for infringements relating to free competition or the use of personal data.
According to public channel CCTV, Tencent has received nine sanctions since the beginning of the year. As a result, the government adopted “administrative measures” against the group, such as the obligation to submit to inspection any new application or updated version made available to the market.
“After passing inspection, they can be released to customers,” said the Ministry of Industry and Information Technologies, according to CCTV.
Tencent told AFP it will accept the demands.
The group owns, among others, the popular WeChat app, which includes messaging, online payment and social networking.
