Yesterday, China urged an end to opposition to Palestine’s admission to the United Nations, ahead of a possible vote on this matter in the UN Security Council.
In support of the recent resolution of the United Nations General Assembly on Palestine, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said that his country urges the countries concerned not to continue to oppose the moral and humanitarian conscience of the international community.
He added that China urges countries not to continue obstructing decisions related to Palestine’s accession to the United Nations.
Beijing’s renewed support for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state comes after the United Nations General Assembly overwhelmingly supported, on Friday, a resolution calling for a re-evaluation of Palestine’s membership application in the United Nations and granting it additional rights.
The resolution was adopted with a vote of 143 member states in favor, and the Security Council recommended that the matter be reconsidered positively.
143 countries voted in favor of the resolution, 9 opposed it, including the United States, and 25 countries abstained from voting, including Britain.
Palestine applied for full membership in the United Nations in 2011, but did not receive the necessary support from the Security Council under the US veto. But in 2012, it obtained “permanent observer status.”
