Washington.- China demanded this Friday U.S plus “flexibility“If you want to make progress with North Korea, after Washington once again convened the UN Security Council to denounce Pyongyang’s latest missile test.
According to the Chinese ambassador to the United Nations, Zhang Jun, the US government should put forward “more practical, more flexible” and that they “accommodate the concerns” of North Korea if you want the Asian country to change its attitude.
“The key to resolving this matter is already in the hands of U.S“, defended the diplomat in statements to journalists before the beginning of the session, held behind closed doors.

The meeting called by Washington came after North Korea last Sunday tested an intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM) for the first time since 2017, a test that culminates the arms escalation launched this month by the regime and that raises its order against the United States.
The increase in trials comes after a few years of calm as a result of the dialogue process between the North Korean leader, Kim Jong-un, and the then US president, Donald Trump, and which was closed without firm results.
For the Chinese ambassador, any solution requires dialogue between the two parties, as was shown by the summits held between Trump and Kim, which led North Korea to suspend missile tests.
Meanwhile, the US ambassador to the UN, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, assured that her country remains willing to meet with the North Korean authorities “without preconditions” and regretted that until now they have rejected the talks.
Asked by journalists, Thomas-Greenfield did not rule out the possibility that US President Joe Biden could eventually meet with Kim, but made it clear that that day is not near.
“If the conditions are right, we would certainly consider it, but right now we are in a situation where we have not been able to bring (the North Koreans) to the diplomatic table for any kind of discussion,” he said.
The US ambassador appeared before the media after today’s meeting to read a joint statement signed with other members of the Security Council in which they condemned the latest North Korean test and asked the rest of the countries to support an official message in this regard, which so far it has not been produced due to lack of consensus.
“The price of the Council’s silence is too high,” the US and its allies said, pointing out that it would only help to embolden Pyongyang and make it continue with its tests, which violate UN resolutions.
Meanwhile, the Chinese ambassador had argued before the meeting that his country would only support a Security Council statement if it was something that could help reduce tension.
China and Russia, which have avoided supporting condemnations by Washington and other capitals of the North Korean tests, have tried in recent months to push for a UN resolution offering Kim relief from international sanctions in exchange for suspending the tests. armament.
The initiative, which has not prospered, was heavily criticized today by Thomas-Greenfield, who, when asked by journalists, assured that such a measure would only serve to “reward” the North Korean government “for its bad behavior.”
