The Chinese Minister of Industry, Jin Zhuanglong, asked Apple executive Tim Cook this Wednesday that he expects the American technology giant to “deepen” its presence in the Asian country, according to a statement released after their meeting in Beijing.
China is a vital market for Apple, but in recent years, the company has faced declining sales amid stiff competition in the smartphone market.
Still, Minister Jin has asked Cook that he hopes “Apple will continue to deepen its presence in the Chinese market,” according to the ministry statement.
He also added that he hopes Apple “increases its investments in innovation, grows alongside Chinese firms and participates in the dividends of high-quality investments.”
Cook visits China for the second time this year and tested the iPhone 16 camera in a historic district of Beijing with fashion photographer Chen Man.
The iPhone remains popular in China, but its sales have fallen amid the rise of local competitors such as Huawei.
Apple fell to sixth place in smartphone sales in China in the second quarter of the year, from number three in the same period of 2023, according to analysis firm Canalys.
