The former Chernobyl nuclear power plant, occupied and controlled by the Russian military since February 24, is again connected to the electricity grid, according to the director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, reported on Tuesday (15). .
In a statement, the UN nuclear agency confirmed that at the plant, where the worst nuclear accident in history took place in 1986, power supply was restored on Monday afternoon (14), when the diesel generators were finally turned off. The plant had been dependent on these generators since March 9, although according to the IAEA there was no danger of radioactive leaks.
Although the facility – which no longer generates energy – is under the control of the Russian army, it is still managed by Ukrainian personnel, but without the possibility of exchanging shifts between employees.
Therefore, Grossi warned that technical and security personnel work “under enormous stress without the necessary rest” amid the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which began on February 24. Furthermore, the Ukrainian nuclear regulator stressed that the information the IAEA receives about Chernobyl is “controlled by Russian military forces”.
