Jorge Rodríguez, head of the Chavista campaign command for the referendum on the annexation of Essequibo, said this Tuesday (5) that the Venezuelan regime will take action in the “next hours” on the disputed territory.
Rodríguez’s speech comes days after the referendum held last Sunday (3) in which, according to the Venezuelan regime, the majority of participants supported the annexation of the disputed region with Guyana.
In an interview given this Tuesday, the Chavista leader guaranteed that “the actions that will be taken in the next few hours will be based on the “people’s mandate” in favor of the rights that Venezuela claims to have over Essequibo, and on the implementation of “a accelerated plan for comprehensive care of the current and future population of this territory”.
Rodríguez, who is also president of Venezuela’s National Assembly controlled by Chavismo, reiterated, like dictator Nicolás Maduro, that Sunday’s consultation is “binding”. This could indicate a possible incursion into Essequibo, a region controlled by Georgetown, to create a new Venezuelan state, and the end of Venezuela’s recognition of the jurisdiction of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) over the matter, given that issues related to both The themes were “approved” in the referendum.
“You will see, starting this afternoon, […] We are going to shut them up with the binding nature of this referendum, starting this afternoon, be very attentive, be very attentive to what will happen this afternoon”, declared the chavista.
Venezuela considers the result of Sunday’s referendum as a mandate, that is, mandatory, based on its own Constitution, which establishes the binding nature of the issues submitted to popular consultation.
In this case, the Venezuelan regime wants to move to “meet and comply” with all five referendum questions that, according to the regime, were approved by the population on Sunday. Among the referendum questions was also one on the creation of a Venezuelan state in the Essequibo region called Guayana Esequiba, and the provision of Venezuelan nationality for the region’s inhabitants.
Guyana condemned the Venezuelan referendum and considers it an internal decision by the Maduro regime and not an international decision. The country has already taken the matter to the ICJ, which assumed jurisdiction over the case and will issue, on a date yet to be defined, a binding decision on the dispute for both nations.
