Fire has been burning for 4 days; a team of around 50 firefighters is working to count the flames and the causes are unknown
A fire destroyed more than 10,000 hectares of Chapada dos Veadeiros National Parkin the region of the city of Alto Paraíso de Goiás (GO). The flames started on Thursday (September 5, 2024) – this Sunday (September 8), they enter their 4th day. Earlier, 2 planes from ICMBio (Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation) were sent to help fight the fire.
In a bulletin released this Sunday (8.set), ICMBio, which administers Chapada dos Veadeiros, said that one of the fire fronts is expanding and reaching areas of great ecological importance for Chapada. “Due to the rugged terrain, the available aircraft cannot operate on this front.“, it states in a note (read below). The operation awaits the arrival of a support helicopter this Monday (9th September).
According to the institute, there is no information about how the fires started in Chapada dos Veadeiros or any suspected perpetrators. A team of around 50 firefighters is working day and night, non-stop, to fight the flames, according to the bulletin.
The flames started on Parallel 14, where the G0-118 highway passes, connecting Alto Paraíso to the cities of Teresina de Goiás and Cavalcanti. On Saturday (7.Sep), traffic was interrupted in the area due to the smoke.
In videos on social media, firefighters from Backfire Network (Volunteer Brigade Network in Chapada dos Veadeiro) report greater difficulty in containing the fire, as the flames remain below ground and the area is flammable.
