Unusual accident
Next year Somkiat Chantra will make his MotoGP debut racing as a regular rider with the LCR Honda team and replacing Taka Nakagami. Chantra’s 2024 season in Moto2 hasn’t been particularly encouraging so far, but in Indonesia even bad luck took care of going up against the 25-year-old Thai.
The standard bearer of the Idemitsu Honda Asia team was in fact forced to withdraw from the Mandalika race due to an accident as unusual as it was dangerous which saw him as the unfortunate protagonist. During the chaotic first lap of the race Chantra was inadvertently hit on the leg by Fermín Aldeguer’s bike. The Thai had a wide leg when approaching a curve and the Spaniard made a mistake in overtaking, hitting his colleague’s limb with his motorbike.
Right leg injury
Chantra managed not to fall in the impact and remain on his Kalex, but the violence of the impact and the pain it caused inevitably forced him to retire. The unfortunate driver’s grimaces of pain once he returned to the pits immediately went viral. The team then released a short note via social media, in which it explained the condition of its driver and reassured him of his recovery from the unfortunate accident.
“We are happy to be able to say that Somkiat is very strong and well – we read in the message released by the team – the next few days will mark the evolution of his injury after today’s race in the Indonesian GP. We are very proud of you Somkiat, the whole Honda Team Asia family wishes you a speedy recovery.”
