The information collected by Demographic Census 2022, and disclosed this Friday, 23rd, by IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics), show that 171.3 million people live in houses, which is equivalent to 84.8% of the Brazilian population. The proportion of those living in apartments has been growing, as in 2000 it was 7.6% and reached 12.5% at the time of the survey.
According to the data, the municipalities of Santos (SP), Balneário Camboriú (SC) and São Caetano do Sul (SP) are the only ones among all 5,570 with a predominance of apartment residents.
In comparison with information collected from 2010 and 2022, the proportion of people living in apartments increased in all regions of the country. The highest percentage was recorded in the Southeast (16%), followed by the South (14.4%) , and the North (5.2%) appears with the lowest percentage.
The Census also classified households as town houses or condominiums, which in 2010 represented 11.6% of people living in Brazil, now house 2.4% in 2022. Together, the house and town house types or condominium contains 87.2% of the population.
“The highest occurrence of townhouse or condominium type households was recorded in Rio de Janeiro (5.9%), followed by Roraima (5.3%). Espírito Santo (0.5%) had the lowest percentage”, informed the Census.
Among the states with the highest proportion of people living in homes is Piauí (95.6%), followed by Tocantins (95.3%) and Maranhão (95.1%). The Federal District (66.14%) leads with the highest proportion of individuals living in apartments, while Tocantins (2.5%) had the lowest percentage.
Other categories are not very significant, such as 0.2% of the population in dwellings like rooming houses or tenements and 0.1% in indigenous housing without walls or longhouses.
