The use of AI in gaming is becoming more prominent over time and many large companies are taking the first steps in character generation non-players made with Generative AI. The Cyberpunk 2077 quest director – Pawel Sasko – however, believes that there is still a long way to go before AI NPCs are equal to human-created characters.
Speaking to Aftermath, Sasko revealed what the Cyberpunk 2077 team did AI research and development activities. He didn't specify what experiments the company has done, but on a personal level, Sasko is deeply skeptical that AI-generated NPCs can achieve the same level of depth and nuance that a human writer can infuse into a character.
“I could definitely see ways in which this could be used to increase responsiveness“said Sasko. “But when it comes to writing and dubbing, the road ahead is still very long and gigantic. I saw a lot behind the scenes. There's a visible gap between authored content – the bespoke content that writers, mission designers, movie designers craft with their own hands – and what AI can deliver.”
Sasko points out that This is not a small gap. Directly comparing recent NPC AI experiments to CD Projekt Red's character work in Cyberpunk's Phantom Liberty expansion, he says, “The gap in quality, specifically, is huge. It's like a canyon.”
CD Projekt RED and its upcoming projects
We can therefore assume that for CD Projekt RE's next projectsD there will be no AI contributions.
Speaking of upcoming projects, we know that there are three The Witcher games in development, plus the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 and a new IP. The team recently updated on the progress of these titles.
