The United States has several ports of entry both on the border with Mexico and Canada. However, in the latter case, climatic conditions prevent the work of some stations throughout the year. But, With the arrival of warmer temperatures, the seasonal opening of certain offices is announced, such as Chief Mountain.
Through a statement, the Customs and Border Protection Office (CBP) announced that, Starting next May 15, the seasonal port of entry, located on the edge of Waterton Lakes National Parkwill be available.
- From May 15 to 31 from 9 am to 6 pm
- From June 1 to September 2 from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
- From September 3 to 30 from 9 am to 6 pm
CBP also provided a series of recommendations to travelers who plan to reach this port of entry which, from the United States, is located on Highway 17, in Glacier County, Montana.
- It is important that Visitors have their proof of citizenship documents ready upon arrival at the inspection area, for example your passport, Real ID enhanced driver’s license or trusted traveler card.
- If traveling with children, and if both parents are not attending, a notarized letter of permission will be required.
- You must declare all your purchasess to CBP, including fruits, vegetables, live animals, and meat products. Failure to do so will result in a fine.
- You must declare if you have money for more than US$10,000 when leaving or entering the United States.
- Do not attempt to cross the border outside of established operating hours.
- Please note that this port of entry is only open seasonally due to weather, so changes could arise with short notice, so, plan your trip well.
What items can and cannot be brought in from Canada to the United States?
As part of the Seasonal opening of Chief Mountain Port of Entry, The US government provided a general list of items that can be brought in from Canada and which are prohibited.
- Most fruits and vegetables grown in the United States or Canada for personal consumption can enter both countries, with the exception of homegrown citrus fruits, tomatoes, peppers, and potatoes.
- Each vehicle may enter with up to 50 pounds or 22 kilos of beef, pork or chicken of Canadian origin for personal consumption.
- Meats, fruits or vegetables purchased in the United States are not restricted from entering Canada, as long as you keep your receipts and leave the labels attached.
- It is prohibited to bring firewood from Canada into the United States unless accompanied by a heat treatment certificate.
- Pet food must be transported in its original container and cannot require refrigeration or contain lamb or goat.
- Any weapon or ammunition must be declared when leaving or entering the United States.
- Although medical and recreational marijuana is legal in many states in the United States and Canada, the sale, possession, production and distribution remain illegal and its crossing at the border is prohibited.
