Comparison is with the same period of the previous year; IBGE data indicate that chicken and pig slaughters fell in the period
Cattle slaughter increased by 24.1% in the 1st quarter of 2024 compared to the same period of the previous year. However, slaughtering of chickens (-1.3%) and pigs (-1.8%) fell compared to 2024 in the same comparison.
The preliminary results are from the Livestock Production Statistics, released on May 9th by the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics).
Comparing the 1st quarter of 2024 with the 4th quarter of 2023, here are the results for the slaughter of:
- cattle – grew 0.9%;
- chickens – expansion of 4.0%;
- pigs – fell 1.6%.
The complete results and data for the Federation units will be released on June 6.
The first results show that the total number of cattle heads slaughtered in the 1st quarter of this year was 9.24 million. Chicken slaughter recorded 1.59 billion heads and pig slaughter 13.92 million.
Of the total number of cattle slaughtered, the preliminary result indicates a production of 2.38 million tons of carcasses – an increase of 23.6% compared to the same period in 2023 and a decrease of 2.1% compared to the 4th quarter of 2023.
In relation to pigs, the accumulated weight of carcasses reached 1.28 million tons. There were reductions of 1.0% compared to the 1st quarter of 2023 and 1.6% compared to the 4th quarter of the same year.
The accumulated weight of chicken carcasses was 3.36 million tons in the 1st quarter. The annual decline was 2.7% compared to the 1st quarter of 2023. There was an increase of 5.4% compared to the immediately previous quarter.
MILK
The acquisition of raw milk made by establishments operating under municipal, state or federal health inspection was 6.20 billion liters. There was an increase of 3.4% compared to the same period of the previous year and a reduction of 4.0% compared to the 4th quarter of 2023.
The production of chicken eggs reached 1.10 billion dozen in the 1st quarter of 2024. The result corresponds to increases of 6.5% compared to the same interval in 2023 and 4.0% compared to the last quarter of 2023.
The research also shows that tanneries that tan at least 5,000 whole units of raw bovine hide per year declared having received 9.32 million whole pieces of raw hide in the 1st quarter of 2024. This quantity represents highs of 19. 9% compared to that recorded in the 1st quarter of 2023 and 1.6% compared to the immediately previous quarter.
THE SEARCH
The research provides information on the total number of heads slaughtered and the total weight of carcasses for bovine species (steers, cows, steers and heifers), pigs and chickens. The collection unit considers the establishment that carries out the slaughter under federal, state or municipal health supervision. The periodicity of the survey is quarterly. For each quarter of the calendar year, data is broken down month by month.
