The Department of Education of Catalonia has proposed on Tuesday to expand the prohibition of mobile in the classroom at all educational stages and also restrict the use of screens in the children’s stage. Specifically, the Ministry has commissioned the new commission for responsible digitalization to evaluate these two measures, as explained by the Minister Esther Niubó.
For a year, mobile use in classrooms either in children or primary school is no longer allowed but in secondary schools for educational purposes. But the Generalitat wants to go further and has asked to evaluate the prohibition also in ESO. Aimismo, Norubó has commissioned Ivalua an audit to evaluate how digital devices are being used in the classrooms.
Norubó stressed that the work that was done last year until reaching this regulation was “very important”, but he has said that they now want to go further, not only studying whether it is necessary to expand the prohibition to ESO but also opening the fan of digital devices subject to the regulations. Norubó has said that they want to study the generic use of digital devices and screens in schools and, specifically, in children.
The Minister explained that this need arises from the fact that many digital devices have been acquired since the pandemic and its use has been expanded, but without an analysis of how these new technologies have been applied.
Fifteen experts to reflect and make recommendations
Norubó has announced these approaches after presiding over the first meeting of the Commission for responsible digitalization. The group consists of about 50 people, professionals and representatives of organizations and entities related to digital development, as well as directors of centers, teachers and academics. The coordinator will be the pedagogue and Doctor of Education Sciences Màrius Martínez.
The commission is divided into two groups. A first format for professionals from different work fields that know the effects of the uses of digital devices and environments and their consequences. This will be responsible for diagnosing the situation and the problems detected, which will end with a set of criteria, guidelines and proposals for the educational community.
The second group consists of professionals from the socio -educational areas that know the use made of digital screens and environments in the school context and also about digital literacy. This will start from the initial diagnostic report and prepare another on the uses of the screens in the school context, in educational stages and in different typologies of the center.
