The possible presence of wolves in Catalonia, where there are four or five isolated males from France, has led the Department of Climate Action of the Generalitat to form a working group on the canid with representatives of the livestock, environmental and guardian sectors. foresters, who follow the trail of the animal in the autonomous community, to improve the relationship between the wolf and the localities where conflicts may arise.
Although only two solitary females have been detected in Catalonia in the last 20 years and the Government has denied that there is evidence of reproduction, experts assure that it is a matter of time before the number of specimens increases naturally. In fact, Brussels is considering making the conditions under which these animals can be killed more flexible given the high growth in different parts of Europe, where they are recovering naturally.
The objective of the working group formed by the Government is to minimize conflicts that may arise due to a possible reproductive presence of the wolf in Catalonia and the increase in specimens that could attack livestock in Catalan rural areas. The Department of Climate Action intends to avoid another case like the one rebel Goiat bear, which carried out up to 27 attacks on livestock farms in the Catalan and French Pyrenees in 2018. Among his victims were mares, foals and sheep.
The Grup Llop Catalunya, a platform that is in favor of the recovery of the wolf in Catalonia and that will be part of this new Government space, already asked the Administration in May to create this commission to safeguard the presence of the canid and prevent possible attacks.
Wolf populations practically disappeared from Catalonia at the beginning of the 20th century. Starting in 2003, the first identifications began to be made, especially in the Cadí and Ripollès areas. Twenty years later in Catalonia there is no established breeding population of wolves, although there is the presence of isolated individuals of Italian-Alpine origin, which are animals that come from the natural dispersal of the wolf population present in France.
This year, 2023, only one damage caused by the wolf has been confirmed in the Moianès region (Barcelona), where Rural Agents have confirmed that it has already been in the area for around two years.
