In some cars, the inside door handles stop working if the car is locked from the outside. Autoliito’s education manager Teppo Vesalainen recommends finding out the working mechanism of your own car and hiding the key from children.

The newer ones electronic car locking systems can cause dangerous situations if, for example, a child is left inside a locked car. This can be the case especially if you have not properly familiarized yourself with the locking mechanisms of your own car, says the Autoliito training manager Teppo Vesalainen.
“Older cars may have roll-up windows. Now Electric windows have become more common, and you can’t open them if the car is not powered on,” says Vesalainen.
Eastern Finland On Wednesday, the police announced an incident in which a child had died from the heat inside a passenger car.
According to the police, the child’s parents had not acted indifferently or negligently. No crime is suspected.

So far, there is no information on how the child got stuck in the car.
However, certain types of locking systems can work in such a way that the doors cannot be opened from inside the car. Vesalainen does not comment on the accident, but considers risks related to car locking systems on a general level.
In part According to Vesalainen, cars have a safety locking function that disables the inside handles when the car is locked from the outside.
“The idea of the car manufacturers has been that no one can use, for example, an iron wire to hook the door open from the inside handle,” he says.
Nowadays, some cars lock themselves even when you take the key far enough away from the car. According to Vesalainen, the way the locking system is implemented has a lot of differences depending on the car brand.
In addition, car windows are rarely opened by pulling. Even if the windows only open electrically, it can be really difficult to get out of the car if there is no power and the doors are locked.
Vesalainen emphasizes that he would not wean electronic mechanisms, even though they may bring with them mild phenomena.
In terms of safety, the most essential thing is to know what kind of system your car has and to act accordingly. According to him, reading the car’s manual and familiarizing yourself with the operation of the system in practice is desirable.
It is recommended to use the child lock while driving if there are small children on board. However, Vesalainen reminds that there are also risks associated with child locks.
“There are usually no child locks on the front doors of the car, but a panicked child sitting in the back seat may not know this,” says Vesalainen.
“Children and pets should never be left in a hot car. The car should always be kept locked in the yard, and the keys should be hidden from children.”
How then should you take action if you can’t get out of the car for some reason?
“If the doors do not open by pulling on the inside handle or there are no mechanical levers on the car’s rear windows, you can still try to press the unlock button usually found on the car’s dashboard. After that, you can try again,” Vesalainen pleads.
If the doors or windows still cannot be opened, the only option left is to break the window. This may be necessary, for example, in accident situations.
Vesalainen says that it would always be good to have a glass hammer as safety equipment in the car.
“If you can’t get out of the car, the most essential thing is to break a side window that you can get out of,” says Vesalainen.
