World champion van Dijk wins out in the Netherlands, but it is the race that causes discussion: first the risks in the race, then the gifts from the sponsor and the sexist controversy
It all happened in the chronoprologue of the EasyToys Bloeizone Fryslân Tour, a three-day Dutch women’s race formerly known as the Healthy Aging Tour. Ellen Van Dijk of Trek Segafredo won for the first time as world champion, ahead of the other Dutch Rejanne Markus, 7 ” behind and the Swiss Marlen Reusser (+ 0 ” 25). Twentieth Elena Cecchini (Team SD Worx) at + 1’19.
How many risks
–
The sporting result, however, takes a back seat compared to the absurd conditions in which some of the best female cyclists in the world had to compete. Cars, vans and even a bus took the wrong route, grazing the athletes running at maximum speed. In the evening, the organizers apologized: “The time trial took place on a completely closed course. All roads were secured with 89 traffic controllers. The cars and cyclists came from houses and driveways on the course.” But the organizers themselves conclude: “The solution is that in the future we will no longer include a time trial in a stage race”.
Sex toys and … vacuum cleaners
–
The other surprise came when Van Dijk was given a box full of sex toys, including a vibrator and a deck of Kama Sutra cards, as a prize. The champion is good at playing down, asking her fans for advice on how to use them, even if even in this case there were no tender comments towards the organizers and their main sponsor EasyToys. Sexism or bigotry? Always better than being delivered to drying racks and vacuum cleaners as happened in other races.
