Carlos Tatay, rider of the Moto3 world championship until 2022 (in which he also obtained his first world podium in the Indonesian Grand Prix held in Mandalika), was the unfortunate protagonist of the JuniorGP, the ex FIM CEV Repsol, who raced on Sunday Portimao Portuguese circuit.
The Valencian rider, who will participate in the Moto2 European Championship in 2023, had an accident in the first race of the category. On the downhill finish straight of the circuit, he had a problem with the front end of the bike, which threw him off and ended up on the ground. Both the bike and he ended up crashing into the crash barriers.
Although the crash did not appear serious at first, he was forced to undergo surgery on Sunday evening due to the “seriousness of his injuries”, as reported by his team, Pertamina Mandalika SAG.
Although the JuniorGP race direction announced that the Alacuás rider was conscious, the situation was judged serious at the medical centre. He was transferred to the hospital in Faro, in the Algarve region, to be operated on. At the stroke of midnight, the team confirmed that the operation had been a success and that the pilot would remain under observation until the recovery process was assessed.
It is also worth noting that the pilot’s staff told the Valencian newspaper “Las Provincias” that Tatay’s life is not in danger, which is the best news. As for the injuries, it has been reported that some vertebrae have been affected, although it remains to be seen how his recovery will be from now on.
Fortunately it was only a scare for the twenty-year-old, who will race in the JuniorGP in 2023 to relaunch his career, after suffering several problems in the Moto3 World Championship, that made him take a step back. Motorsport.com wishes Tatay a speedy recovery.
