In the promotional photos of ‘I can also be president’, Carlos Galdos he wears a hat, but comments that it is not a show directed at—or inspired by—a single character. “The question that I try to solve in the show is why we Peruvians always choose so badly. Indeed, we are seeing that anyone can be president in Peru, but this has been going on for a long time. I can also be president and that is very serious, but that has to do with us. So, that’s what the show is about, that’s the premise, of course, I try to do an analysis of the last thirty years from the humorfrom my sarcastic codes, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have to be critical”, he tells us over the phone about the show that opens on the 28th. “I think it’s a perfect date (laughs)”.
The show inaugurates the new space at the PUCP Cultural Center, ‘NOS’ (according to the statement, it will be the first Leed Platinum convention center). “They open the space to my humor proposal, which has to do with the citizens. It is not ‘we are going to talk about such’, but rather we are going to talk about how we Peruvians are. Due to infrastructure and equipment, the show can only be done in a space like that theater and because the date warrants it.”

“There is no analysis to choose from”
Galdós anticipates that in ‘I can also be president’ he will talk about the political class in general because he wants the public to understand that “we are all co-responsible” for the crisis. “I think that the public wants to go to a comedy show, but it is one that also leaves you with questions. In addition, during the night I will be putting together theories about why we choose so badly and how we Peruvians are when it comes to choosing. I think that the same public is going to land in the conclusions and that is what I like”.
Personally, he says he has come up with “a bunch” of those theories. “There is one that has nothing to do with humor. I think that we are not yet aware that the decisions of politicians have an impact on our lives and the lives of our children. In other words, it has a scope of 15 or 20 years. What is happening to Peru now is not going to be corrected tomorrow even if (Pedro) Castillo leaves. The impact is already there, right? We have to row from behind again. I think we made the wrong choice because we care more about the characteristics of a television when buying. I mean, when you buy a television or a car, you do all the analysis that you don’t do when choosing a politician, right? But I also believe that there is a tyrannical exercise of keeping us ignorant. From the State, many governments ago, there is a very clear exercise of brutalization”.

Although, obviously, he will talk about this government and the president, he maintains that there are “several” people responsible and that “criticism will always be necessary from art” or another sector. “I back down, because this is not Castillo’s responsibility, only. Castillo is one more, this is not Castillo’s merit, because he has no merit in anything. I don’t know what the fund is in Peru. The other day someone told me: ‘But we were worse off in Alan García’s first government.’ Go figure! I said, ‘But why don’t you look ahead. Why not compare ourselves with the best’. You don’t have to get rid of your body, because it’s not about ‘I don’t expect too much’, this is our responsibility”.
The show will go until July 31. “It would be good (for politicians) to go, to have a bit of a reality check.”
