Councilor says that the agenda was “hijacked by the left” and that there are controversies about the “vegetarian and vegan lifestyle”
Rio de Janeiro councilor Carlos Bolsonaro (PL) presented on April 4 a PL (bill) to ban vegetarian and vegan menus in daycare centers and public schools in the capital of Rio de Janeiro. According to him, the agenda was “kidnapped by the most radical left-wing militants”.
As justification, the councilor uses reports from different vehicles on the topic and a statement from the German Nutrition Society, from 2016, to question the diet. The son of the former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) states that there are controversies about the “vegetarian and vegan lifestyle”. Here's the complete of the text (PDF – 361 kB).
“The adoption of vegetarianism/veganism is apparently based on two basic principles, one supposedly beneficial to health and the other environmental. Although it may seem that there are certain benefits to the human body when adopting this type of dietary philosophy, it is necessary to question, again, whether this is a generality, […] or if it is a particularity of certain human organisms”he wrote.
Carlos Bolsonaro also stated that he asks his peers in the Rio City Council to analyze the issue “to understand what is behind vegetarianism beyond slogans about healthy eating and protecting the environment”. According to the councilor, global warming is a “fallacy”.
